Many supervision meetings focus on information giving. The supervisee often goes through the tasks undertaken for a previous period and the supervisor often records the tasks undertaken. Isn’t this case management? Or a descriptive account of work, with no clear direction or discussion around the value of the work, the true learning around the work and the impact it has on us?
Having a more reflective supervision really allows a supportive relationship, a little protected time to be heard and maybe understood with clear focused direction for ongoing learning and development. It offers a much more meaningful experience for the supervisee as well as you as a supervisor.
Shouldn't supervision and annual appraisals be more than “turning up” - a meeting that meets more than compliance? Why do we have supervisions and appraisals - because we “have to” - shouldn’t we “look forward to” supervision and appraisals? Shouldn’t we leave it feeling more energised, motivated and focused? As leaders and managers with responsibility for having a management oversight we have to balance the “need to know” with the importance of those we supervise feeling “held”. Join us as we discuss how.
Together we will consider:
The supervision relationship and preparing for supervision
Obtaining a balance of need to know, action planning and
Understanding what is reflective supervision and how is this managed
Conducting a meaningful appraisal
Formats for both
